Abstract | Coastal Vegetated Shingle is an extremely rare habitat in England and Europe; and is one of the UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) Priority Habitats. The first national digital inventory for coastal vegetated shingle sites in England has now been produced. This shows the extent of coastal vegetated shingle in England and is based on the last national survey of this habitat, which took place between 1988 and 1991. Significantly, it has been found that there is less coastal vegetated coastal shingle in England than previously thought. Natural England will use the findings to promote actions to achieve the UK BAP targets for this habitat and to improve the condition of the vegetated shingle feature within protected sites. |
