Abstract	There is a wealth of maritime archaeology to be found in the area between high and low water, termed the intertidal zone. Although this can be a challenging environment both for archaeological remains and for undertaking fieldwork, the heritage resource is vast. Just a few of the types of sites found in and around the shores of the Solent and its tidal tributaries, such as the River Itchen and the River Hamble, include abandoned or hulked vessels, fishing structures, hards, landing places, salt-making and brick works, shellfish beds, cargo scatters from unloading vessels and trackways. As many of these sites have not been archaeologically recorded, the MAT has developed projects to identify sites and assess their potential and significance, and undertake detailed survey work.
