Terms of reference The RYA is the national body for all forms of recreational, competitive and professional boating. It represents dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sportsboats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and personal watercraft. The RYA is recognised by all government offices as being the negotiating body for the activities it represents.

The RYA also sets and maintains recognised standards for training for both leisure and commercial boating through a network of more than 2,400 RYA Recognised Training Centres across almost 50 countries. More than 220,000 people per year complete RYA training courses.

The RYA is committed to promoting all forms of boating and making them accessible to everyone.
 

Membership The RYA continually fights for the rights and freedoms of its 108,000 personal members, the majority of whom choose to go afloat for purely recreational non-competitive pleasure on coastal and inland waters. There are an estimated further 500,000 boat owners nationally who are members of RYA affiliated clubs and class associations.
Geographical Area The RYA South region includes the Counties and Unitary Authorities of: Buckinghamshire, Hampshire and The New Forest (including Havant, Portsmouth & Southampton), Milton Keynes, Oxfordshire, Reading, Channel Islands, Isle of Wight, West Berkshire, and Chichester Harbour (inc. all areas under the jurisdiction of the Chichester Harbour Conservancy).

The RYA also publishes a quarterly RYA Magazine free to its Personal Members and affiliated organisations.
Relevant projects/initiatives The yacht/sailing clubs are involved in organising major racing events in the Solent and Christchurch Bay, as well as their own domestic racing programmes. Major events include: Cowes Week, Admiral’s Cup series, Round the Island Race, Lymington Cup, Off-shore Powerboat races, start and/or finish of events such as Round Britain and Round the World, Eurolymp Regatta, several championships - world, international and national, Chichester Harbour Federation Regatta Week.
Affiliations The RYA (and/or in some cases clubs or local associations) nominate members of Cowes Harbour Commissioners, Hamble River Management Sub-Committee, Lymington Harbour Commissioners, Chichester Harbour Conservancy Advisory Committee, Langstone Harbour Advisory Committee, Solent Area Sailing Advisory Committee, Southampton Water Recreational Users Group, Solent Forum.
